WHAT IS MEAT AND THREE?

The first Southern Meat and Threes founded in the 1920s, were cafeteria-style luncheonettes and among the earliest restaurants in the region to cater to working people—urban clock-punchers—looking for a taste of home at midday.

 

“These restaurants brought the flavors of the country to the city, providing the foods people longed for,” said John T. Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi.

 

They became known for their big portions and huge variety, with, often, dozens of dishes to choose from in composing your own balanced meal.

culinary tradition is well-known in The South but new to many in the Kansas City area.
